Aperture Nature Workshop (Jackson Hole) Day Three

ANPW Contest Winners & Pros at Teton Overlook

Photo by Lisa Bettany – The Entire Group Poses for a Photo

Day three began at 5:00 am and ended at midnight. The photographers started out the day by capturing sunrise at Teton Overlook. This was an excellent opportunity for our winners shooting a panoramic landscapes. When the sun rose over the Tetons, we raced over to the Mormon Row barns to catch the early morning light on the barns…30 minutes later and the sun would be to high and shadows would start to appear.

At 9:30 am, we headed back into Jackson Hole to grab breakfast and warm up. The contestants were overjoyed when Scott handed each of them a copy of Aperture 2, a premium subscription to Lynda.com, a gift certificate for $350 worth of Lensbaby gear, a set of all current Peachpit Press Photo-related books, a Lifetime Pro Membership to Photrade, in addition to the ThinkTank Rotation 360 bag that they received prior to the workshop and a Firewire Drobo set to arrive upon their return.

Martin taught the contestants more advanced techniques for editing their photos using the powerful adjustment tools and available plugins for Aperture. There were many “oohs” and “ahhs” from both the contestants and the Pros, remarking at the power of Aperture. Retouching, recovering highlights, and adjusting colour were made within a view clicks or toggles in Aperture. Once the contestants had perfected their best shots, Martin showed them how to print, email, and create web galleries with their photos.

The workshop ended with Martin demonstrating the awesome capabilities of the Book-making tool. With this tool, you can not only design and print your own book, but create anything imaginable, like one-page promotional cards, posters, and business cards. Everyone was absolutely smitten for Aperture and Martin, who’s enthusiasm and knowledge of the application affected everyone.

Next, we were treated to a presentation by the passionate photojournalist, Steve Simon. What a treat! He inspired us with his photos and amazing stories of failure and success and demonstrated how he uses Aperture to manage and edit his photos. Wow! What a day! And it’s not over yet. I will talk about the incredible night shoot of stars we had in the next post.

Nik Updates Dfine Plug-in for Aperture – Bundles Plugins

by admin on September 27, 2008

Nik has updated it’s noise reduction plugin – Dfine 2.1. It’s a free update for licensed users of version 2.0 and is now available as an Aperture Plug-in.

The new version provides compatibility with Aperture’s multi-image support, allowing photographers to easily reduce noise in several images without leaving Dfine’s interface. The new version also has a control for removing banding noise.

A new license is $99.95 when purchased direct from Nik.

The company has also bundled Dfine, Viveza, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro and Sharpener Pro into the Complete Collection, for $599.95 when purchased direct from Nik.

The ANPW Contest Winners

Photo and Article by Lisa Bettany

R-L: Richard Rothstein, Rob Trueman, Catherine Chung, & Bryan Mayler.

The contest winners were up bright-eyed and bushy tailed this morning at 5am, hoping to catch a beautiful dawn in Grand Teton National Park. The actual workshop *learning Aperture* was to begin later, but at first light, the students split up into two groups to take some pictures.

The first group went 30 minutes down the road to Schwabacher Landing and the Mormon Row Barns, and the others heading out a little further to the iconic Oxbow Bend. I trucked it to Oxbow Bend with Richard and Bryan. Everyone came prepared for the cold, except Steve, who was a bit whiny and runny nosed from the early morning and frosty temperature.:)

Scotty was determined to get a great shot, so we headed down this step muddy hill to the bank of Snake River. And then we set up our tripods half on the muddy bank, half in the water, and pointed our lenses towards the iconic view and waited. And waited. No interesting light seemed to be happening on Mt. Moran, but suddenly a slight mist of fog started floating just above the water line behind us. As the fog began to roll, Scott jumped and “yahooed” and turned his camera in the other direction and started shooting the silhouetted trees against the wispy, pink sky.

Everyone was carefully switching lenses near the water, and Scotty reminded us to always keep one hand on your tripod near water. He has tragically lost two cameras in the water, so let him be the lesson for all of us.

Catherine and Rob went to Schwabacher Landing, but immediately left when no clouds were present, creating little opportunity for dynamic shots. They headed up the road past the landing at Teton Overlook and grabbed some amazing panoramic shots of the Southern Tetons. Rob disappeared from the group for a while and ran into a one horned elk. And all that happened before 9:30 am.

After breakfast, the workshop got in full gear at the beautiful Jackson Arts center where an Apple Aperture Guru blew our minds with the dynamic power of Aperture software. We imported our images, learned how to compare and select our favorites, and generally found out that Aperture can do most of the things we used to do in Photoshop.

We are learning more advanced techniques tomorrow. I can’t wait. I’ll do a dedicated post on Aperture in the next few days. Right now I just need my mind to rest and catch a few hours sleep before tomorrow’s exciting activities.

Aperture Nature Workshop (Jackson Hole) Day One

Schwabacher landing, Grand Teton National Park

Photo and article by Lisa Bettany

Yesterday I arrived in the small Moutnain Resort town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I couldn’t help “oohing” and “ahhing” at the spectacular view of the mountains, winding rivers, and the gorgeous colours of the changing leaves as the plane descended over the Grand Tetons.

Scott was worried that we might miss the the fall colours, but he couldn’t have picked a better week. The weather is perfect, the colours are spectacular and the wildlife is abundant — in fact just after arriving we saw a huge herd of Bison saunter across the road, munch on some grass, and then cross back over to the same spot they came from. Scott amused us by vocalizing the inner dialogue of a massive, sleepy looking guy. I believe his name was “Wilber”.

Since my arrival, Scott Bourne and I have headed out on a sunset scouting mission at Oxbow Bend and a dawn shoot at Schwabacher landing. I’m not gonna lie. Dawn is freezing and early. Today it was around 25°F (-4°C) and I was way underdressed. Even with three layers I was c-c-c-cold. Scott loaned me a jacket and gave me these little heat packs that I put in my gloves which helped a lot.

After the sun came up, we scouted the Mormon Row barns that are surrounded by tall grass and slender birch trees and framed by the Tetons. Brilliant.

I have to admit, I have never shot any nature this iconic, and it is a bit daunting trying to take a great and unique shot of something that has been photographed a million times. As a beginning nature photographer, my main goal is just to soak up as much knowledge from the pros as possible and try to do these impressive landscapes justice.

Meet the ANPW Winners: Richard Rothstein

by admin on September 22, 2008

Richard Rothstein is presently residing in Miami, Florida (and part time from Sarasota, Florida and Anchorage, Alaska).

Tell us a bit about your photography and where we can see more of your photos.

My wife and I currently have an on-again, off-again web site at ImagingNature.com, specializing in scenic and wildlife photography of Florida, Alaska and Africa. We like scenics but our passion is wildlife. Photography currently is a small side-business for us since our day job is Orthodontics and we’re very busy doing that; when we retire, however, we will have time and try to develop the photography as a primary business (so we could at least cover our, uh, printing costs and stuff like that… (Retirement Rules!!!)

We’re very environmental, love being in wilderness areas (where there is a dearth of people) and our photography consists of only scenic and wildlife subjects…no people stuff. We’ve been doing it for 20-30 years. People are indeed scary. Though some are round and fuzzy, kinda like bears.

What are you looking forward to most about ANPW?

I look forward to this trip since it affords me time away from Miami, in a wonderful setting, with available professional instructors for both photography and Aperture. I’m sure it’s going to be a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere to learn. What could be better?

Not much! And last, but certianly not least, what gear are you bringing with you to ANPW?

Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III Canon EOS 1D Mark III Canon 800 5.6 L IS Canon 28-300 3.5-5.6 L IS Canon 17-35 2.8 L Canon TS-E 24mm 3.5 L Canon TS-E 90 mm 2.8 L Canon 1.4X II Teleconverter Cable release, Polarizing filter Gitzo C.F. tripod w/ Arca-Swiss Ball head and Wimberley Sidekick Apple MacBook (my travel computer) and external hard drive 4, 8GB compact flash cards Apple iPod and head phones.

Thanks Richard. Glad there will be another Canon user at the workshop!

You can see all the winning photographs on the ANPW Photrade site. Stay tuned for an introduction to another one of our contest winners, Catherine Chung.

I shoot a lot of different stuff from wildlife and landscapes to portraits and corporate work. I love being out in nature so I’m most drawn to landscapes and wildlife. A year ago, I shot Yellowstone and the Tetons with a group from Nikonians.com. It was a fantastic experience making friends lasting a lifetime.

What do you hope to gain from the trip?

I hope to gain contacts and experience. Learning from the best is exciting! Being able to shoot with people whose work you admire is exciting and intimidating.

Awesome. Now let’s get geeky and talk gear! What camera gear are you bringing to the ANPW?

Nikon D200
Nikon 17-55mm f2.8
Nikon 60mm f2.8 micro
